animation John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages Like the few great movie sequels Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here as we find out Woody voiced by Tom Hanks is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 60s childrens show When a greedy collector takes Woody Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen launches a rescue mission with Andys other toys To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since well the first Toy Story Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature Pixar shows how much technology has advanced the human characters look more human backgrounds are superior and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling And its a hoot for kids and adults The film is packed with spoofs easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates the filmmakers are storytellers first Woodys heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U S two other outstanding 1999 animated features The Iron Giant Princess Mononoke could not it became a huge box-office hit --Doug Thomas Toy Story [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video There is greatness in film that can be discussed dissected and talked about late into the night Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed and nary a word needs to be spoken This kind of entertainment is what they used to call movie magic and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second much like another film innovator Walt Disney The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more Two keen retrospectives are new one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the films impact The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips Theres a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets Missing besides the second film which will be released separately is the effects- and music-only tracks Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5 1 track The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer both versions are eye-popping A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box Lasseters story is universal and magical what do toys do when theyre not played with Cowboy Woody voiced by Tom Hanks Andys favorite bedroom toy tries to calm the other toys some original some classic during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party when newer toys may replace them Sure enough Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen is the new toy that takes over the throne Buzz has a crucial flaw though--he believes hes the real Buzz Lightyear not a toy Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting including Don Rickles as Mr Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur The director-animator won a special Oscar for the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film In other words the movie is great --Doug Thomas font face Verdana Arial The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Not an ideal choice for younger kids this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production The story finds a lion cub son of a king sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle The little hero finds his way into the circle of life with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place Characters are very strong vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific the jokes are aimed as much if not more at adults than kids the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features But be cautious this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd --Tom Keogh Anybody who struts around with Simbas hard-won authority deserves this royal DVD read-along from Disney Kids can recoil at Uncle Scars dastardly deeds en espa ol and discover that hakuna matata sounds pretty much the same in Spanish French Italian or German And should the dynamic storytelling fail to thrill your 4- to 12-year-old fan a flurry of other interactive options await Toggle to Songs for sing-along renditions of movie hits including I Just Cant Wait to Be King and on to Music Videos where Elton John roars soundtrack favorites Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M groove to Hakuna Matata The Vocabulary feature allows for see-and-say mastery of a list of wildlife while the Game section allows players to match paw and hoof prints to the proper beast and reassemble the scattered skeletal remains of an elephant Original cast voices are featured and grownups will be pleased by the packages reading component --Tammy La Gorce Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke Babes In Toyland (1986) Orion Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys Classic The film that officially signaled Disneys animation renaissance following The Little Mermaid and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured It relates the story of Belle a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title Workout: Starring Jane Fonda, original 1982 Last of the Dogmen [VHS] Hbo Home Video Despite an irritating tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story it wasnt Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist Barbara Hershey search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films As in Kevin Costners Oscar-winning movie however there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning mystery and loss --Tom Keogh Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video One of the brightest nuggets from Disneys golden age this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world with scores of major and minor characters including fauna and fowl each with a distinct identity When you watch Snow Whites intricate graceful movements of fingers arms and head all in one shot it is not the technical brilliance of Disneys artists that leaps out at you but the very spirit of her engaging girl-woman character When the wicked queens poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it Based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal in mythic terms with the psychological foundation for growing up Its a crowning achievement and should not be missed --Tom Keogh
